    We recommend travelling to Rotorua via Tirau, a vibrant and busy little town with quirky corrugated iron buildings.  Further on, at Fitzgerald Glade, the lush ferns and pretty tree canopy signals the approach into Rotorua. A geothermal hot spot, Rotorua is full of steaming vents, spouting geysers and bubbling mud pools. The city is surrounded by mountains, rivers, forests and lakes with natural hot springs perfect for bathing and relaxing.  Rotorua is the heartland of Maori culture and an ideal place to experience the traditional customs of New Zealand’s indigenous people.

    Agrodome is just a 10-minute drive from Rotorua city centre, in the heart of a real 350-acre working New Zealand farm. You’ll hear amazing facts and have a few laughs as you’re introduced to 19 breeds of sheep. Witness a live sheep shearing demonstration and the remarkable farm dogs as they demonstrate their ability to respond to commands and keep those sheep in line. Your visit includes access to the Farmyard Nursery, home to the smallest, cutest animals at the Agrodome. Pet and have your photo taken with cute lambs and other baby farm animals. Then pop across to the herding area to watch a free live dog trial after the show. Allow: 1 hour

    Just seven minutes from central Rotorua lies the geothermal valley of Wakarewarewa Thermal Reserve and Pohutu geyser.     There’s a bit of everything on today’s journey.  Travel through dense forest, skirt the shores of vast Lake Taupo, traverse the remote Desert Road where dramatic volcanic peaks dominate the landscape, and follow the sparkling Tasman Sea to Wellington.  Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city.  Set between a sparking harbour and forest clad green hills, this compact city is home to New Zealand’s National Museum and is best explored on foot.

    Set in 180 hectares, Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand’s only open range wildlife park. The Park cares for over one thousand animals representing 90 different species, many of which are critically endangered. Hop on board the complimentary Safari Shuttle driven by a wildlife expert who provides a commentary whilst driving a 25 minute circuit of the Park. See New Zealand’s iconic native species including kiwi, kea and tuatara.

    Departing Christchurch, a lush patchwork of flat, green farmlands surround you as you traverse some of the most impressive, braided rivers in the world. Enroute, the charming village of Geraldine provides for a convenient halfway refreshment stop.  At Lake Tekapo the Church of The Good Shepherd, sitting solitary at the edge of the vivid blue lake, offers a popular photo opportunity. Continue on the spectacular scenic drive through dramatic and vast landscapes to a rugged land of ice and rock, home to New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki Mt Cook.

    The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre's 126-seat custom-designed theatre is a tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary, humanitarian, ambassador and one of the world's greatest explorers, the center showcases the Aoraki Mount Cook region, its people and its place in the universe.

    Depart Mt Cook Village on a bus trip to Tasman Valley followed by a 25-minute alpine walk to board a boat tour like no other. Surrounded by snow-capped alps, you will be expertly guided through the ice age as you view the gigantic Tasman Glacier Ice wall. Explore and learn about the ever-changing glacial landscape and listen to the huge ice-face melting in this peaceful glacial lake. Icebergs of every shape and size periodically tear away from the face of the glacier into the rapidly growing lake. This is one of the few accessible glacial lakes containing icebergs in the world.     Return along the shores of beautiful Lake Pukaki to rejoin the main highway.  The fascinating towering pinnacles of the Clay Cliffs are situated just before Omarama where you will take the southern route through the beautiful and dramatic Lindis Pass.  The journey then whisks you alongside lakes and rivers through Cromwell, a historic mining town known for its stone fruit, to the sophisticated resort town of Queenstown. With its majestic mountains that plunge into crystal clear Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is a hub of adventure, buzzing with adrenaline and a smorgasbord of outdoor activities.

    QUEENSTOWN  MILFORD SOUND – Approximate travel time 5½ hours

    Follow the southern arm of Lake Wakatipu where the Devils Staircase rest area and viewpoint is a highlight.  Continue to Mossburn before joining SH94 and heading to the lakeside township of Te Anau, an ideal place to pick up any last minute supplies.

    Not just a journey, the Milford Road is a destination in itself with the scenic highway featuring spectacular alpine scenery.  Be sure to stop at Eglington Valley to appreciate the beauty and sheer scale of the landscape. View the spectacular reflections of the Earl Mountains at the Mirror Lakes and keep an eye out for Kea, New Zealand’s cheeky mountain parrot on the way.

    Milford Sound - Milford Sound Cruise - Sovereign at 1.15pm

    Experience spectacular Milford Sound where sheer granite cliffs tower into the sky and plunge into the depths of clear water while Mitre Peak stands like a massive sentinel, guarding this amazing fiord. Depart Milford on a full length cruise with views of waterfalls, rainforest and wildlife easily enjoyed from large windows, spacious decks and comfortable lounges. Experience the spray of a waterfall as you cruise close to sheer rock faces and watch out for dolphins, seals and penguins. Informative, participative, and relaxed, this is a perfect way to experience Milford Sound. Duration: 2 hours

    The return journey along the stunning Milford Road scenic highway provides the possibility of stopping for further sightseeing or photo opportunities that may have been missed on the way into Milford.  At Te Anau, you’ll turn inland to Mossburn then northwards to the little lakeside settlement of Kingston. Hug the shores of beautiful Lake Wakatipu as it meanders beneath the surrounding towering mountains as you take yet another scenic journey into Queenstown.

    There are two scenic drive options between Queenstown and Wanaka, over the mountainous Crown Range or alongside the rivers and lakes, through Cromwell.  Wanaka is a perfect location for those looking for all the splendour of the southern lakes but a more relaxed ambiance than Queenstown.

    GLACIER REGION  CHRISTCHURCH - Approx travel time 5½ hours

    Travel through the scenic rainforest and past flowing rivers to Hokitika, known for its pounamu (jade, greenstone).  Turning inland at Kumara Junction, take Arthur’s Pass Road, the shortest, highest and most spectacular route across to the East Coast. Travel through the foothills of the mighty Southern Alps and alongside spectacular braided rivers until the flat green farmlands of the Canterbury Plains heralds your arrival in Christchurch.
